Meet Him...

While living the hectic life of an Ohio University student with a mayoral campaign taking up most of his free time, Sergey makes it a goal to be available to answer all questions posed by Athens residents. Aside from keeping a facebook and a myspace [myspace.com/hollowturtle], he also has made his cell phone number available to everybody : 513-518-1851. As part of an effort to be as available as possible to the people, and to avoid the dependency on local media for the public's information, he has made his personal cellphone available for direct contact. Naturally, there may be times when he is in class or out with friends when people won't get through, but he promises to call back everybody that leaves a message. Feel free to test his flexibility on this promise if you're skeptical. However, he will not answer any drunk dials after 3am.

No, not an Athens native, not even American born

Sergey Kahn was born in Kharkov, Ukraine while it was part of the former Soviet Union. While young his parents chose to imigrate to the states to give their children a better opportunity and save them from the religious persecution that was still being exhibited even in a post-WWII Russia. They emmigrated to Cincinnati, OH with very little money to rebuild their life anew with Sergey and his older brother Alex. His parents refused to spoil their kids or themselves with material goods, and would instead save money for trips abroad. They felt that experiencing other cultures and seeing the world around us first hand was of much greater value to their kids' development than a Nintendo. As an adult, Sergey has been greatly affected by these travels. While, being an opponent of the globalization and empirical marketing strategies practiced by America and other leaders of the world, he has noticed that there is a much more valuable asset overlooked by corporations: ideas. The trade in ideas between countries and cultures is cheap and universally beneficial. He hopes to used what he has learned in America and abroad to make life and business in Athens fuller and richer.

Halloween Plans Halloween can be a polarizing topic for many Athens residents, and it is Sergey's hope to bring the citizens together on what should be a good time for everyone. He plans to put in a Beer Garden on Court St. Between State and Carpenter. This will provide a regulated source of much needed revenue, and provide good times for those in attendance. Not to mention, it will not get in the way of the rest of Court St., which will remain open and free as before.

Also, he plans to create a carnival style, family friendly Court St. for the daytime during Halloween for local families to enjoy, while students nurse their hangovers from the night before.

An event planner? It's important for Athens to control the direction that the event takes, as well as maintain responsibility for it. It's our festival, and we can't rely on an outsider to control what happens to it. However, Sergey is not opposed, to hiring an event advisor, to provide ideas and suggestions to city council based on his/her experience.

Cleaning Up The Streets Athens ticketing policy for litter without enforcement does nothing but create the illusion that something is being done. Sergey's idea?

Volunteer trash cans...

The city will pay for residents' trash service for a year for those who volunteer to leave a trash can [and perhaps recycling as well] outside their house at all times for the use of the public. At the end of the year, another neighbor can volunteer. By making trash cans more accessible, the city will be cleaner.

The best way to run a city is with the help of its residents, not by fining them.

Parking Alas, parking is a big problem in Athens, and most small towns in fact, but a couple changes should be made immediately.

First, signs must be posted in areas where the 24 hour parking restriction is enforced. Many residents are towed as a result of not knowing the law, and that is unjust if not legally then ethically.

Second, people shouldn't have to move their car everyday on a street that they reside. They will recieve parking passes for their car and cease blowing smoke into our air needlessly.

These measures are small and much more needs to be done to fix the parking situation in Athens, however, Sergey feels that these initial measures are important for Athens to remain honest in its desire to be pro-people in its parking reform.

Local Grant "Recently, one of our local businesses, (comic shop), burned down and I thought to myself, 'wouldn't it be great if there was a local grant to help them rebuild?' I'd like to start such a grant for local projects that help the local culture of Athens. This could either be a local business that is at risk or a public arts project that everyone can enjoy.

Athens' culture is its most valuable resource and the government must provide for its maintainance and growth. "

Bicycle Transportation System Is it a fad, or a great new form of public transportation?

Paris, France has begun a public transportation system where people check out bikes in one part of town and return it 30 min. later in another. This idea has potential in helping Athens' air stay cleaner, and streets safer. Sergey wishes to investigate, the possibilies of such a plan in Athens.

Other Points... His love for the outdoors makes the environment one of his key concerns, right next to local business growth, bringing jobs to Athens that won't compromise it in future generations, cleaning the water, and clossing the division between students and locals. He hopes to serve the people of Athens as their mayor in the upcoming years.
